PennDOT's test blasting went off without a hitch Friday morning on the hillside along Route 28 southbound in an area south of Exit 11 in Harmar that is prone to rock slides.
With a loud "poof," about 100 feet of rock tumbled down the hillside shortly after 10 a.m.
Almost immediately, a PennDOT official declared the blast a success.

A second test blast is scheduled this morning for the Route 28 hill stabilization project in Harmar, the state Department of Transportation announced, the Pittsburgh Trib reports.
PennDOT's $8.5 million plans for preventing future rock slides includes drilling into the hillside and inserting dynamite to blast away 77,000 cubic yards of jagged, overhanging rock.
The plan is to close Route 28 and Freeport Road once a week in the late mornings or early afternoons to accommodate the blasting. The 15-minute weekly closures should extend into July the Pittsburgh Trib reports.
