PennDOT has discovered problems on eight other bridges similar to those that caused the Birmingham Bridge to partly fail, the highway agency said this morning.

State inspectors found the problems while checking 120 bridges -- aside from the Birmingham -- in the Pittsburgh region, said PennDOT District 11 Executive Dan Cessna.

The eight bridges, which include spans on the Parkway West and Route 28, have been bolstered and are safe to drive, Cessna said. Modifications to ensure the safety of the bridges already have been made. More comprehensive repairs are planned at the 62nd Street Bridge, the Pittsburgh Trib reports.
