Cross Keys could be returning
Indiana Township's historic Cross Keys property, abandoned and somewhat in disrepair, may once again be resurrected as a Lower Valley hotspot.
Supervisors approved a site plan by Fox Chapel-based developer, RMU Properties, which plans to reopen the storied site along Dorseyville Road.
"They have asked us to apply for a liquor license, and we will hold a public hearing on that matter May 13," Township Manager Dan Anderson said.
Anderson said there are no plans for expansion.
According to plans submitted by RMU, the existing rear shed roof will be removed
The 43,000 square-foot lot has a market value of $678,000, according to the Allegheny County Real Estate Web site.
Originally built in the 1850s, the site is one of the oldest in the township.
In its early heyday, the restaurant was called the Kittanning Pike Hotel and was used as a stopover for people traveling by wagon from Pittsburgh.
The inn is an old-style colonial home, with a library, bay windows and several fireplaces. In the early 2000s, the property housed an Italian restaurant and a spa but has been closed for several years after a series of owners failed to realize the success once boasted by the Cross Keys.
Whether for luck or a nod to history, the new owner plans to incorporate Cross Keys into the name, Anderson said.
