Legion team shines; readies for postseason
The Springdale American Legion baseball team had a busy week last week as it played a total of five games.
Judging from the results, Manager Frank Sweeney may be scheduling a lot of these five-game weeks.
The team racked up four wins and a tie to improve to 14-5-1 in the Allegheny River Division and in the process, they all but secured either the third or fourth playoff spot.
On Wednesday, the local team beat Monroeville 6-1 with Steve Langue picking up the win and T.J. Banas belting a home run.
On Friday, Sweeney's squadpulled off an amazing comeback that resulted in a tie.
They were down 11-2 heading into the last inning against West Mifflin.
Springdale scored nine runs to tie the game, which was called due to darkness after West Mifflin batted.
"That was one of the most exciting games I've ever coached," said Sweeney.
"West Mifflin was shocked. What made it even better was that we had a lot of substitutes in the game and they were making the clutch offensive and defensive plays."
On Sunday, Springdale capped the week with a doubleheader sweep of 20th Ward.
Donnie Sippel pitched a one-hitter in the opener.
"It was the first batter in the game," said Sweeney of who got the hit.
"He hit a grounder that hit the first base bag and rolled into the outfield. They didn't get a hit off of Donnie after that."
Jeff Susi had three hits to lead the Springdale offensive attack. Joe Donahue picked up the win in the nightcap.
Playoff pairings were expected to be announced earlier this week, with games expected to start today (Thursday) and Friday.
