Watkins enjoyed team's camaraderie
Susie Nettlelbeck Watkins was one of the top soccer players to ever come out of Fox Chapel Area High School.
The 1995 graduate was part of a team that compiled a 58-15 mark over the course of her four years.
She was a three-time selection for the All Section and All North teams and was a two-time North Player of the Year and Sweet 16 member.
She was a National All American in 1994.She was also a member of the lacrosse team.
"I think my fondest memories of playing soccer at Fox Chapel all happened during my senior year," she said. "We had a great group of seniors. There were nine or 10 of us and we had played together for quite a few years.
"We made it to the state semifinals that year. I really enjoyed the camaraderie we shared."
After graduation, Suzie went to Wake Forest as a recruited walk-on.
During her freshman year, she played in all of the team's games and started in a few of them.
However, she suffered a torn ACL during her sophomore year that virtually put an end to her career for two seasons.
"I redshirted for a year and came back, but I was mainly a cheerleader from the bench. I lost a lot of time due to the injury. It was a great experience though.
"We were a relatively new program when I got there and we made the NCAA playoffs all four years I was there."
Suzie played on a women's team and also did some coaching.
Now living in Yakima, Wash. with her husband, Chris, Suzie will soon be reconnecting with athletics.
"The Police Athletic League has asked me to become a lacrosse coach for their junior and senior high school teams," she said
