Residents ready to clean up

Aspinwall Borough will appear cleaner and greener next week after volunteers hit the streets to tidy up.

The third annual Green Streets clean-up will take place Saturday throughout the borough. Last year, 80 residents split into groups and tackled the streets, alleys and common areas in their neighborhoods, removing litter and cleaning out curbs.

"It's a great way to conjure up a sense of community pride," business owner George Marsico said. He will host entertainment at Aspinwall Beans 'N Cream on Brilliant Avenue after the cleaning session.

"It brings residents together and it's helpful to the local businesses to get people down here."

The event -- part of the statewide Great PA Clean-up Project and the "Pick It Up PA Days" in recognition of Earth Day -- has drawn more residents each year. Communities register to participate in the project, which runs from April 19 to May 3.

The first year brought about 40 people to the event.

"Hopefully even more residents will show up this year," said Tripp Clarke, coordinator and borough resident. Along with Joe Guiffre and Liz Cothren, the project leaders will distribute safety vests and gloves, maps of the borough and supplies to volunteers.

The small community only takes about an hour and a half to clean up with about 100 volunteers, Clarke estimated.

"It goes pretty quick," Clarke said.

"And the borough looks great afterwards, especially the alleys where people and garbage men often leave stuff laying on the ground."
