The 13th Street Boat Ramp project in Sharpsburg isn't dead yet -- despite a missing boat ramp that authorities suspect was stolen for metal value.
Crew workers will install a new boat ramp this week, allowing the project to continue and possibly reach a June 30 deadline.
The ramp cost $5,100, which will be covered by insurance and cost the borough only the $250 deductible, according to borough secretary Ron Borczyk.
The work will include digging concrete footers to anchor the ramp to the property, preventing a repeat occurrence.
"We hope this will keep the ramp where it belongs and this project can be completed in time," Stelitano said. "It's going to be great for the community."
The former 600-pound aluminum ramp installed only a year ago likely was stolen when it disappeared in early April, according to councilman Larry Stelitano.
Job Corps students are continuing the work they began almost two years ago at the site. A private contractor also is working there, under grant funds.
The aluminum likely was stolen to be sold to scrap metal yards for money, Stelitano said.
Borough council will consider installing surveillance cameras at the boat ramp site and at Kennedy Park, another spot of repeat vandalism.
